First Webtoon Review: Seasons of Blossom
What will I be reviewing this week?
Hello all and welcome back to Webtoon Weekly! As mentioned last week, I will finally be reviewing a webtoon! This week I want to talk about the webtoon Seasons of Blossom.
Overview
As you may have already guessed, this webtoon occurs during the four seasons starting from spring through winter. One unique feature of this webtoon is each season focuses on a different set of characters who are all related to each other in some way. Although the characters are connected, each character goes through their own personal struggles and journeys as the story progresses. The endings of these journeys bring mixed feelings. Some have more closure and happiness while others leave the reader feeling sad or unsatisfied.
Spring
Seasons of Blossom begins with a lighthearted school romance between a tall, popular girl named Bomi Yun and a short, quiet boy named Jinyeong Choi. As the season progresses, they meet each other, become closer, and eventually get together.
In my opinion, this season is by far the most innocent and joyful. It is what I expect from a webtoon labeled as romance. However, now that I have read the entire webtoon I believe it is the most deceptive of all the seasons. By the time I finished this season, I thought the next season, summer, would be focused on another carefree relationship. But I could not have been more wrong.
Summer
The summer season is about Jaemin Lee, a friend of Bomi’s, and his older brother Hamin Lee. Hamin’s story is told when Jaemin encounters a past acquaintance of his, Somang Han. The catch is Hamin is no longer alive. He committed suicide a few years ago due to academic stress. As Jaemin learns more about his brother and Somang shares his story, both grieve and try to come to terms with his absence.
For me, this season is by far the saddest. Readers learn more and more about Hamin and grow attached to his character knowing the whole time he is already dead. This and the sadness Somang and Jaemin experience is heartbreaking drastically conflicting with the first season. Still, watching the characters grow and learning more about them keeps readers engaged and leaves them wanting to gain an even deeper understanding of each character’s backstory.
Fall
Seasons of Blossom continues to connect characters from previous seasons to current ones. The third season is about Gaeul Jin, Somang’s friend, and Subin Kang, the brother of Bomi’s best friend, Seonhui Kang. The two of them have a…complex relationship. Gaeul was bullied when she was younger, and Subin was a part of the friend group that did this to her. Now in college, Subin has no idea who Gaeul is; regardless, she plans to use a relationship with Subin to get revenge on his friends. This does not turn out as planned as feelings develop between the two.
Continuation Next Week
Since Seasons of Blossom is rather complex due to the four storylines, I will continue reviewing the fall and winter seasons next week. So far, I hope this webtoon has caught your interest. Until next time!
Thanks for reading,
Laura
